Jennifer Granholm Net Worth $1 Million
Jennifer is of mixed ancestry; her maternal grandparents are from Ireland, while her paternal grandmother came from Norway and her paternal grandfather immigrated to Canada from Sweden. She is the daughter of Shirley Alfreda and Victor Ivar Granholm, who worked as bank tellers.
When Jennifer was four years old, she and her family moved to California. She eventually matriculated from the San Carlos High School, where she became Miss San Carlos, winning the beauty pageant. After matriculation, she aspired to become an actress, but she wasn’t quite successful. Instead, she worked at Universal Studios as a tour guide, also in customer service at the Los Angeles Times. Furthermore, at Marine World Africa USA in Redwood City, she was the only female tour guide to pilot boats with 25 tourists aboard.
In 1980 she acquired US citizenship, and then took her first steps in politics, working on the presidential campaign for John B. Anderson. The same year she enrolled at the University of California, Berkeley, and four years later graduated with a BA in Political Science and French. She lived in France for a year, becoming involved in the Anti-Apartheid Movement, and helping to smuggle medical supplies and clothes to Jewish people in the Soviet Union.
Following her return to the USA, she enrolled at Harvard Law School, from which she earned a Juris Doctor degree in 1987.
Soon after graduation, Jennifer found a job at the US Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, as a clerk for Judge Damon Keith. However, that engagement lasted only a year, as she took a job working for Michael Dukakis’ campaign for President in 1988. After that, she worked as an attorney in the Wayne County executive office for two years, and then in 1991 assumed the position of Assistant US Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan. Four years later she took a step forward, becoming the youngest Corporation Counsel for Wayne County.
Jennifer didn’t stop there, as in 1999 she was elected as the 51st Attorney General of Michigan, defeating Republican John Smietanka. She served only one turn, not because she wasn’t re-elected, but because she became the 47th Governor of the state in 2003, beating the Republican candidate Dick Posthumus with 51.42% of the vote. She served as Governor until 2011, the limit set in the state. Meantime, in 2008 she was a part of the presidential transition team for Barack Obama, and joined his economic advisory team.
After her second term ended as a Governor of Michigan, Jennifer became the Distinguished Adjunct Professor of Law and Public Policy at the UC, Berkeley Goldman School of Public Policy, and UC, Berkeley School of Law. She also holds a position in several other educational institutions, such as Senior Research Fellow at the Berkeley Energy and Climate Institute (BECI) Faculty and Project Scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
To speak of her career on television, she worked for NBC in the show “Meet the Press”, and has hosted her own show “The War Room with Jennifer Granholm” on Current TV.
Jennifer is also an author; alongside her husband Daniel Mulhern, she wrote a book “A Governor’s Story: The Fight for Jobs and America’s Future” (2011).
Regarding her personal life, Jennifer has been married to Daniel Mulhern since 1986; the couple has three children together.
Thanks to her successful career, Jennifer received the courtesy title of Her Excellency, while in 2010 she was made a Commander of the Royal Order of the Polar Star, First Class by the King of Sweden, due to her devotion to improving relations between Michigan and Sweden, and in the same way promoting a clean energy economy.
